Guidelines for Course Placement

The score range on the UPEI assessment test is 1-5. A score of 1 indicates a beginning speaker; a score of 5 approaches native-speaker fluency. Canadian universities require a score of at least 4.5 for unconditional admission (no EAP required).
 

Students receive three CanTEST scores: reading/listening, writing, and pronunciation. Each score is used to place students in different EAP courses. Students who have 3.0 and below on all sections of the CanTEST are required to study full-time in the EAP program, either at UPEI or at Study Abroad Canada.


On average, students will progress one-half band width in one semester. For example:
