Sherri Russell
Aboriginal Academic Advisor
Welcome! On behalf of the Aboriginal students on campus, the Aboriginal Student Association and community from which I reside, I welcome you. It is an honour to have you come to UPEI. No matter what your journey was like, I hope you have an experience here at UPEI that is filled with many great memories. Throughout this small university, you will find a sense of belonging and the aboriginal community at UPEI will continue to grow.
I am from the Abegweit First Nation in Scotchfort. I am a mother of two sons, so I know what it means to work hard. Thanks to those who have our heart in their best interest, a centre has been opened to see that we succeed in our journeys. I encourage you to take advantage of the small campus and especially the services that the Mawi'omi Aboriginal Resource Centre offers. Your success is everyone’s success in that we are building capacity within our aboriginal communities. Let’s continue to thrive at UPEI!
Sincerely,
Ashley Jadis
Nursing Student Graduate, 2011
UPEI is proud of the Mawi'omi Aboriginal Student Centre and of what it means to have this important gathering place on campus. We appreciate the efforts of Julie, Kim, Ashley and everyone who is responsible for the creation of the Mawi'omi Centre. This has come about through a strong commitment from the PEI Mi'kmaq community and leadership, and through much-appreciated support from the government.
The single most important contribution to the success of Mawi'omi comes through the work and achievement of each and every student who takes advantage of this gathering place and its services. We are proud that you are a UPEI student. Don't hesitate to approach anyone at Mawi'omi or anywhere on campus, to ensure that you achieve everything you set out to achieve when you chose to be a UPEI student.
Best wishes with your studies and with all aspects of your life at UPEI.
Sincerely,
H. Wade MacLauchlan

University of Prince Edward Island
Welcome to the University of Prince Edward Island!
On behalf of the PEI Mi’kmaq living on and off reserve, we want to congratulate you for making the decision to further your education at UPEI.
Throughout history, the Mi’kmaq have welcomed visitors to this territory and treated these guests with honour, respect and kindness. We are pleased this tradition continues today.
Getting a quality education is the foundation for positive development and will help open up many opportunities for you today and tomorrow. As an Aboriginal student in our province, you will feel welcome on the campus of UPEI, in particular at the Mawio’mi Aboriginal Student Centre, which opened last year.
The centre encourages students to find a home, find their voice and find a path of a positive future here at UPEI. It welcomes students from all corners of the globe and is designed in the proud traditions of the Mi’kmaq.
The students of today become the leaders of tomorrow and we are honoured that you have chosen to begin your journey in PEI.
