What do we do at the Writing Centre?
We help students, faculty, and staff with any writing project, at any stage of the writing process.
Do I need an appointment?
No, you can just drop in during business hours.
Can I make an appointment?
Yes! Visit The Writing Centre Lounge in Robertson Library Room 213 and sign up for an appointment up to a week in advance.
What if I haven’t even started writing yet?
If you have a writing assignment, we can help you to read and interpret the assignment, brainstorm for ideas, get started on research, or organize an outline.
What if I’ve started, but I am unsure of what to do next?
We will help you move along in the process.
What if I just want someone to correct my grammar and spelling?
We are not editors. The idea behind the Writing Centre is to facilitate and support writing. We will work with you, giving you the skills to edit your own paper, but we will not take ownership of your writing by doing it for you.
If I come to the Writing Centre, will my paper get a better mark?
There are no guarantees. We find that students' papers are generally better-developed and more clearly written after the writer has sought feedback from a Writing Centre tutor. We often receive positive comments from students saying our services have helped improve their writing — in ways that translate into higher grades.
How far in advance of the due date of the paper should I come in?
We tell people that coming in the day the assignment is due — or even the day before — is not good practice. You want to be able to have time to change your paper based on decisions you have made as the result of your session. You may also want to have another appointment to see how those changes have affected your essay.
